Q: Where did you grow up, and what brought you to the Chicago area?
A: I grew up in Elgin, IL, which is about an hour west of Chicago. I grew up visiting the city with my family often, and went to college near Chicago. I’ve always loved the lively atmosphere of Chicago and am excited to be closer to it again!
Q: Where did you go to college for your music therapy degree?
A: I earned my Music Therapy Equivalency Certificate from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. It’s a smaller school that is based in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, which is near Terre Haute and Indiana State University. I was able to complete the majority of my coursework online and do my practicums and internship in Illinois, so I didn’t have to put life on hold. This program is what made it possible for me to become a Music Therapist!
Q: What individuals and groups do you have experience working with?
A: I worked at Giant Steps, a therapeutic day school in Lisle, IL, for 6 and a half years before beginning my music therapy internship there. Giant Steps services individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder ages 5-22. I loved working with this age range and am passionate about that work!
Q: What are your favorite instruments to use in Music Therapy sessions?
A: I love incorporating both guitar and drums into my music therapy sessions. I feel both instruments provide sensory experiences while also allowing the client to express themselves in neuro-affirming ways.
Q: What are your favorite skills to work on in Music Therapy sessions?
A: My favorite skills to work on in music therapy sessions are social and engagement skills, as well as advocacy! I want to help my clients find their voices and know how to use them to be able to communicate with others effectively. Seeing clients overcome those communication barriers is the most rewarding feeling for me!
Q: If you weren’t a music therapist, what would you be?
A: If I weren’t a music therapist, I would probably be a mental health or school counselor. I’m very passionate about mental health advocacy and understanding.
Q: What do you want the Dynamic Lynks family to know about you?
A: I love learning and helping others! I also love to foster an environment where my clients feel they can be their most authentic selves during sessions. It’s part of what makes this job so fun!
Q: What does celebrating neurodiversity mean to you?
A: Celebrating neurodiversity to me means embracing each part of who someone is and encouraging them to embrace it as well. It means understanding that there are so many perspectives on this world and that each perspective is valid. I love to celebrate neurodiversity with my clients by encouraging them to use their voices in an authentic way and helping them recognize that they have autonomy and it’s theirs to take ownership over.
Q: What are you most excited about joining the Dynamic Lynks team?
A: I’m excited to continue to work with the neurodivergent community and to continue to grow as a music therapist and a person. I can’t wait to see what this next step in my career will bring!
