Welcome Our New Team Member: Carly Scruggs

We are thrilled to have the fantastic Carly as one of our newest therapists at Dynamic Lynks! Carly joins us with a background in school-based music therapy and is eager to support learners in our clinic and the community. Keep reading to learn a little more about Carly!

Q: Where did you grow up, and what brought you to the Chicago area?

A: I grew up in Brighton, Michigan (which is near the thumb if you’re looking at your hand map). I moved to the Chicago area for this position at Dynamic Lynks, and because it was time to start a new adventure. I still get to be close to home!

Q: Where did you go to college for your music therapy degree?

A: I attended West Virginia University in Morgantown and completed my degree officially in the spring of 2024. West Virginia rings true to being “almost heaven,” and it will always be somewhere I can call my home. Let’s go, Mountaineers!

Q: What individuals and groups do you have experience working with?

A:  I interned at Monroe County Intermediate School District in Michigan. We worked with a wide variety of students and areas of need, for individuals ages 2-26. There will always be an extra special place in my heart for early childhood clients, nothing brings out your inner child more than a room full of preschoolers.

Q: What are your favorite instruments to use in Music Therapy sessions?

A: I love anything sensory and anything I can classify as a novelty sound to address attention and engagement. I love using instruments in ways other than how they were intended to be played and as sound effects to get clients involved in picture books. This often includes rain sticks, quack sticks, and animal guiros!

Q: What are your favorite skills to work on in Music Therapy sessions?

A:  I love working on attention and engagement skills. Finding what motivates each individual client or student and seeing what really piques their interest, like a light bulb moment, is one of the most rewarding moments in therapy. Each child is different and has individualized preferences on how to engage within the music therapy setting. I really enjoy discovering those preferences and figuring out how we can use them to our advantage to achieve our goals!

Q: If you weren’t a music therapist, what would you be?

A:  I love history and applied to most universities as an anthropology/archaeology major until I heard about music therapy!

Q: What do you want the Dynamic Lynks family to know about you?

A: I want the Dynamic Lynks family to know that I am so excited for the opportunity to become a member of this family and to support this community!

Q: What does celebrating neurodiversity mean to you?

A:  To me, it means allowing space for how everyone is able to show up to their session or school that day and doing the best we can with what we have to offer in the present moment. I strive to honor people’s individuality, no 2 snowflakes are exactly alike and neither are we!

Q: What are you most excited about joining the Dynamic Lynks team?

A:  The Dynamic Lynks team puts an emphasis on continuing education and support for their team members. It is important to me that I am always growing and learning newer and better ways to support the clients I am working with. Dynamic Lynks proves again and again that it is also their priority to have staff members who are growing along with the music therapy field, which is how we continue to provide the best support we can to the people who receive our services!
