Meet Our Music Therapy Intern!

We are so excited to welcome Shelby Huskey to the Dynamic Lynks team! Shelby is in her 2nd year of her Masters in Music Therapy degree at Lesley University. She will be working with Ms. Ava and Ms. Alyssa to learn clinical music therapy skills on her way to becoming an MT-BC from September to May 2021! To help you all get to know Shelby, we did a little Q & A with her!

Q: Where are you going to college for your music therapy degree?

I attend Lesley University located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Q: What is your main instrument and what are your other favorite instruments to play?

I love to sing, play guitar, and play piano equally! Aside from these, I love playing percussion instruments.

Q: Where are you from?

I am from Pigeon, Tennessee where the Smoky Mountains are and where Dolly Parton is from.

Q: What's your favorite part of living in Oak Park now?

I love living in a walkable place that feels like a beautiful blend of city and suburb!

Q: Why do you want to be a music therapist?

I believe therapy in any capacity is an essential part of understanding ourselves, others, and maintaining our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. I have been passionate about music and helping others my entire life and I believe music therapy is the thread that tied together the career I have always dreamt of pursuing. It is my hope that my passion and pursuit of music therapy would create an environment of progress, healing, and growth.

Q: What clinical populations do you have experience working with?

I am grateful for the past opportunities that allowed me to work in school and private practice settings with neurodiverse children, teenagers, and young adults!

Q: What skills are you looking forward to learning about and working on in Music Therapy sessions?

I am looking forward to learning more music therapy interventions and learning more about incorporating music to address mental and emotional health!

Q: If you weren’t becoming a music therapist, what would you be?

I believe if I weren’t becoming a music therapist I would potentially be pursuing a career in commercial music. However, I could also see myself as a lawyer or a mental health counselor (which I am currently pursuing alongside music therapy!)

Q: What are your interests outside of music therapy?

I enjoy more than ANYTHING to be surrounded by nature! I love hiking, biking, camping, kayaking - you name it. I also love tennis and try to play often.

Q: What do you want the Dynamic Lynks family to know about you?

I want them to know I am thrilled to be here and that they can count on me for advocacy, positivity, and support! I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone and familiar with all things Dynamic Lynks.
